December 29: Commemoration of the 14,000 Holy Innocents
Today we commemorate the 14,000 infants killed by Herod as St.
Matthew recounts, "Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the
wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all
the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from
two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined
from the wise men." (Matthew 2:16 NKJV)
"When the King was born in Bethlehem, the Magi arrived from the East with gifts guided by a Star on high, but Herod was troubled and mowed down the children like wheat; for he lamented that his power would soon be destroyed." Kontakion
